Fundamentals #125 — Villages x Little Earth Project Homegrown English Lager

I am writing this at a brand new desk, so fresh out of the flatpack it still smells of freshly sawn wood and musty cardboard. The desk sits in what is now my office, in a house I have lived in for less than a week, and this is the first piece of work I have produced in it since moving house. It feels weird, unfamiliar, unsettling. But, at the same time. it feels promising, hopeful almost. My old desk was with me through a lot of work I feel immense pride for (and a bit that I don’t) and now I get...

Deptford IPA Matthew Curtis SE London Villages
I miss brewery taprooms. I might be a pub creature at heart – someone that longs for a warm, dimly lit space, perhaps sat bellied up to the bar on a high stool, or tucked away in a quiet booth, shielded from the bustle of daily life. But taprooms have a special quality too. They aren’t pubs, but they are just as wonderful at bringing us together. Drinking this new IPA, Big Salad, from Villages, in Deptford, South London, instantly transported me back to the brewery’s own taproom. Like so many in London, it’s nestled underneath a railway arch. It’s...

24. Anspach & Hobday The Pfeffernusse Stout A&H says: Based on the German Christmas biscuit of the same name, the Pfeffernüsse Stout brings together a rich, malty stout with the perfect blend of festive spice. Ginger and cinnamon dominate the nose with biscuity malts and warming spices joining on the palate. We say: Merry Christmas everyone! 23. Brick Lingonberry & Sloe Sour Brick says: A heavily-fruited jammy modern sour ale, fermented with our house Lactobacillus and Kveik yeast and conditioned on Lingonberry juice and Sloe puree. We say: HB&B and Brick couldn't be much more closely linked, from being Jen and...

It’s all kicking off in Deptford. You only need to travel one stop south from London Bridge station and you’re suddenly amidst what is surely becoming one of London’s best beer destinations. As well as the fine folks at Hop Burns & Black (which, being right outside the exit to the station should be your first port of call), you’ve got a range of great bars and some smashing brewery taprooms to enjoy during your stay. Take Gin & Beer, for example. Very few London bars do Belgian beer well, but that is exactly what Gin & Beer does here....
