Beer #24 - Simple Things Fermentations Belgian Christmas And so to our Christmas Eve beer, the cherry on the top of our HB&B advent. Simple Things Fermentations is a small Glasgow brewery doing great things. Here in South London, STF may not have the instant name recognition of, say, a Verdant or a DEYA, but the quality of the beers speak for themselves - every one's a winner. When founder Phil kindly sent us a sample of this Belgian-style Christmas ale, we knew we'd found our Christmas Eve beverage. Lightly hopped, this is packed with all those classic Belgian flavours we love...

Over the past couple of years I’ve become a little obsessed with the idea of legacy, and what it means to modern craft brewers. With the explosion of new breweries in the UK over the past decade or so (there are now more than 2,000), many of us have changed the way we enjoy beer; instead of sticking to a couple of beers we know and love, we chop and change like the tide. Hunting the latest delicious release for the gratifying feeling of both taking that first sip – and being the first to post a pic of it...

24. Anspach & Hobday The Pfeffernusse Stout A&H says: Based on the German Christmas biscuit of the same name, the Pfeffernüsse Stout brings together a rich, malty stout with the perfect blend of festive spice. Ginger and cinnamon dominate the nose with biscuity malts and warming spices joining on the palate. We say: Merry Christmas everyone! 23. Brick Lingonberry & Sloe Sour Brick says: A heavily-fruited jammy modern sour ale, fermented with our house Lactobacillus and Kveik yeast and conditioned on Lingonberry juice and Sloe puree. We say: HB&B and Brick couldn't be much more closely linked, from being Jen and...

Getting a takeaway is usually better in theory than in practice. There is the excitement of ordering too much food and planning a carefree night in front of Netflix; there is the anticipation of waiting for your flat’s buzzer to trill. But then: those spring rolls or onion bhajis, which sounded so enticing on Deliveroo, arrive over-steamed and limp in their plastic, or woefully under-seasoned, or swimming in grease. They just don’t quite hit the spot. Perhaps that’s why the “takeout-style” genre of cooking has been so appealing to me – lately, I’ve craved quick-and-ready comfort with a hint of...
